A Smart Building Solution for Lowering BTUs

Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University is the oldest of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America. Situated twenty five miles west of Philadelphia, Cheyney University began planning for a major energy overhaul of their campus to complement the integration of newer facilities being constructed.

Challenge

In 2010 Cheney University began planning for a major energy overhaul of their campus to complement the integration of newer facilities being constructed. The University needed to lower energy costs while maintaining affordability. This meant integrating legacy Cylon Auto-Matrix® controllers manufactured over 15 years ago to a more advanced integration system.

Solution

AspectFT. Cylon Auto-Matrix has always maintained its ability to integrate to their legacy systems, and presented the university with AspectFT, a web-enabled area control solution to help make their upgrade and transition as smooth and economical as possible. Cheyney University installed AspectFT-Enterprise to integrate their campus, pulling information from each AspectFT-Matrix connected to various Modbus and AAM control devices in individual buildings.

AspectFT has several features which helped the University achieve its goals. One such factor is iCalendar, a protocol that integrates programs like Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook for scheduling a facility. In addition, the native MySQL database allows for robust, detailed, and minable energy data.

We can have access to information from anywhere we have a PC or Internet access. No matter if one of our facility managers is at home or on campus, they can log on and get the nature of a problem and a lot of times correct it rather than have to call in a technician.

Results

Since November of 2010, Cheyney University has saved in excess of $127,000 with the installation of AspectFT, and lowered it's BTUs from 150,000 to 80,000 per square foot. With the University being a state institution, they are assessed by the Department of Environmental Protection for emissions and have lowered that number by 82 tons.

The savings continue...
